Michael Cox

Michael Cox

Michael Cox is recognised as one of the most important British flautists with an international career as soloist and chamber musician. He is principal flute of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Academy of St Martins in the Fields and a former member of the Britten Sinfonia and the London Mozart Players. He is a passionate teacher giving classes all over the world, and brings his unique curriculum to the Oxford Flute Summer School. Michael is professor of flute at the Royal Academy of Music and a visiting consultant at the Royal Northern College of Music.

Katherine Kemler

Katherine Kemler

Katherine Kemler is the Charles and Mary Barré Alumni Professor of Flute at Louisiana State University, flutist with the Timm Wind Quintet, and a regular visiting teacher at the Oxford Flute Summer School. Dr. Kemler has recently returned from a concert tour of Australia where she performed three solo recitals and taught eight masterclasses in such venues as the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the Elder Conservatorium of Music in Adelaide, the Victorian Flute Guild in Melbourne, the University of Western Australia, and the Academy of Music in Perth. She has recorded 4 CDs; the most recent is of contemporary works entitled 'Lipstick'.

Kate Hill

Kate Hill

Kate Hill is co-principal flute with the English Chamber Orchestra and principal flute of the English Classical Players and the Guildford Philharmonic. Her freelance musical activities are widespread, encompassing orchestral playing, concerto performances, chamber music and recording. Kate played with the chamber group The Haffner Wind Ensemble of London for about twenty years: when the Britten Sinfonia was formed the Haffners became the wind section where she was principal flute for over ten years. Former professor of flute at the Royal Northern College of Music and Chethams School, Kate is now a professor of flute at the Royal Academy of Music.

Robert Winn

Robert Winn

Robert Winn is acknowledged as one of Europe's leading flute teachers. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London he was principal flute of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from 1985 to 1997. From 1994 to 1997 he was Professor of Flute at the Franz-Liszt-Academy in Weimar, Germany. Since 1998 he has been Professor of Flute at the College of Music in Cologne, Germany. He has published several technical study books for the flute including 'High Performance Flute' and 'Melodies for Developing Tone and Interpretation'.

Lisa Beznosiuk

Lisa Beznosiuk

Born in England of Ukranian/Irish descent Lisa Beznosiuk is one of the world's leading performers on early flutes. In her dual capacities as soloist and orchestral principal she features prominently on many discs of orchestral music played on period instruments from Bach to Brahms. She is a regular soloist with the English Concert and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, of which she is a founder member.
Lisa’s acclaimed solo recordings include the complete sonatas of Bach and Handel, Vivaldi’s Op.10 Concertos and Mozart’s Concertos and Quartets.
She is a passionate and dedicated teacher with an international reputation and particularly enjoys the opportunity to introduce ways of adapting performance practice and baroque techniques to players of the Boehm system flute.She holds teaching positions at Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Royal College of Music.

Peter Lloyd

Peter Lloyd

Peter Lloyd has had a long and distinguished career as soloist, orchestral and chamber musician and he is an inspiriational teacher. He has worked with Caratge, Rampal, Gilbert and Moyse. Peter is former principal of the the BBC Northern Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. After leaving the L.S.O. in 1987 he spent six years as professor of flute at Indiana University U.S.A., before returning to the Royal Northern College of Music as head of flute studies since 1993. He continues to travel internationally, teaching and giving master classes annually in Australia, USA and Canada. His extensive pedagogical work is now available on CD Rom.

Janet Way

Janet Way

Janet Way founded the Oxford Flute Summer School with her colleague Clive Conway in 1986. A major prize winner at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, she has had a long career both as a player and teacher. Her own teachers were William Bennett, Geoffrey Gilbert and Marcel Moyse. She is a diploma examiner and mentor for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, lecturer at the Royal Academy of Music and was formerly a manager for Oxfordshire Music Service.

Katie Alcock

Katie Alcock

Katie spent her formative flute years as a pupil of Janet Way, and has continued to benefit from over 20 years association with Oxford Flute Summer School. She has played in masterclasses with many great teachers, including William Bennett, Peter Lloyd and Jeanne Baxtresser. Katie's varied role at the Summer School has included administrator, tutor and ensemble leader, as well as giving occasional workshops on music therapy and Japanese folk music. Whilst a student of Oriental Studies at Cambridge University, Katie continued her musical development, playing with the University Orchestra and giving frequent recitals. She has particularly enjoyed exploring the repertoire for flute, soprano and piano. Katie then spent a year at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama training in music therapy and now combines regular solo, orchestral and vocal performances with her work as a music therapist for Warwickshire County Music Service.

Caroline Hobbs-Smith

Caroline Hobbs-Smith

Caroline combines a teaching career with life as a freelance flautist, conductor and arranger. She began learning flute at the age of 13 and went on to study at Wits University in South Africa with Leslie Sheills and later in London at the Royal College of Music with Graham Mayger and Susan Milan where she gained her M.Mus degree. She played for many years with the National Symphony Orchestra of South Africa and later moved to the UK where she has been resident for the past 7 years. She has had extensive teaching experience at the S.A. National School of the Arts and Wits University and currently works for the Oxfordshire Music Service and Abingdon School.

Clive Conway was co-founder of the Oxford Flute Summer School. While still contributing in a consultative role his highly successful and innovative business,
Clive Conway Celebrity Productions now occupies most of his time.
